This is the parade in Moscow's Red Square, devoted to the 64th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, 7 November, 1981. The second year of the 1980s decade would see the continuing of the war in Afghanistan, the inanguaration of US President Ronald Reagan, and with him came an end to the Iranian Hostage Crisis which had been ongoing since late 1979. Cold War tensions which were re-ignited with the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan were ongoing throughout the year. the CPSU also held its 26th congress earlier in the year - the last in attendence for much of the aging Party leadership. Presiding over the military parade, is Minister of Defense of the USSR, Marshal of the Soviet Union; Dmitriy Ustinov. Commanding the parade, is commander of the Moscow Military District, General of the Army; Pyotr Lushev (this would be his first parade as commander). Music by the Moscow Military District Orchestra, directed by Major General; Nikolai Mikhailov (he received his promotion that year). This year's parade introduced new ZIL limousines (the model introduced here was used through 2009), a new orchestra layout, such as the introduction of front drummers to the bandline, as well as the addition of more glockenspiels (this layout would be used through the fall of the Soviet Union). This would also be Mikhail Suslov's (the chief ideological statseman) last parade attendance before his death in January 1982.
