Like its arch-rival, the BMW Z4, this roadster majors on comfort rather than outright performance, but the 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine is responsive, and still offers an impressive turn of speed. The suspension irons out bumps, but switching it to Sport mode stiffens it up to improve cornering performance. The interior is good quality, but the highlight is the optional Magic Sky Control roof, which features special glass that allows the driver to adjust the transparency. Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the 2012 SLK roadster. The most distinguishing feature of the new SLK, now in its third generation, is the panoramic roof with Magic Sky Control, whereby the the transparency of the 'vario-roof' can be changed from light to dark. The new front face of the SLK, with its more upright grill, references the SLS AMG as well as being in keeping with Benz's new design paradigm which is holding to that feature. But the new design still improves on the SLK's drag co-efficient, though - 0.30 compared to the previous model's 0.32. The SLK350 model comes fitted with a new 3.5 liter V6 doling out 302 bhp (225 kW / 306 PS) and powering the SLK to a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) sprint time of 5.4 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph (250 km/h). An SLK250 will be launched later in the year with a 1.8 liter unit producing 201 PS (148 kW). The SLK250 has a respectable 0 to 60 mph sprint time of 6.5 seconds and also features the same top speed as in the V6. Mercedes-Benz promises a better ride on the new SLK thanks to firmer springs and dampers on the suspension and torque vectoring brakes. New technology on the SLK includes an Airguide windstop system - a new invention from Mercedes-Benz's clever engineers to help control air flow and noise in the cabin area when the top is down.
