Date: 12/08/1953 | Type: Tower 30m | Yield: 400kt Joe-4 was the fifth Soviet nuclear test and demonstrated the use of fusion in a weaponizable design known as the Sloika or "Layer Cake" design. The device obtained nearly all of its yield from fission and was limited for practical purposes to yields of less than 1Mt. The RDS-6s warhead used a U-235 fissile core surrounded by alternating layers of lithium-6 deuteride spiked with tritium, and a uranium fusion tamper inside a high explosive implosion system. Though not a true thermonuclear weapon the USSR claimed it was, and in conjunction with the fact that it was air-deliverable caused considerable embarasment to the US. The US did not successfuly test a deliverable thermonuclear bomb untill 1954. A compilation of all the Soviet nuclear tests that I could find. Seven different tests are represented here. Joe-1, Joe-4, Joe-8, Joe-17, Joe-18, Joe-19, and the Tsar Bomba. Теги:sovietrussiannucleartestthermonuclearatomichydrogen
en.rian.ru August 29 was the United Nations' International Day against Nuclear Tests. On that day in 1949 the Soviet Union carried out its first nuclear bomb test, at 7 am at the Semipalatinsk test site. The plutonium bomb, manufactured in the closed town of Ozersk in the Chelyabinsk Region and code-named RDS-1, exploded with a force equal to 22000 metric tons of TNT. The preparations for this first surface nuclear test began long before the bomb was even completed and were conducted with great care. The bomb designers believed that only a test explosion could provide them with complete information on the efficiency and combat capacities of the nuclear charge, according to information in the public domain. Hundreds of thousands people were involved in building and testing the Soviet Union's first nuclear bomb. Design Bureau No. 11 was one of the lead agencies on the project. It had been set up in 1946 specially to develop nuclear weapons. Famous physicists Igor Kurchatov and Yury Khariton were involved in the development of the Soviet nuclear program. Tsar Bomba (Царь-бомба), literally "Emperor Bomb", is the Western name for the RDS-220 hydrogen bomb (codenamed "Иван" (Ivan) by its developers) — the largest, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. Developed by the Soviet Union, the bomb was originally designed to have a yield of about 100 megatons of TNT; however that was reduced by half in order to limit the amount of nuclear fallout that would result. Two bombs were built, a mock bomb and the real bomb, with the real bomb being tested on October 30, 1961, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.[1] Despite testing, the weapon never entered service; it was simply a demonstration of the capabilities of the Soviet Union's military technology at that time. The mock bomb was stored in the Russian Nuclear Weapons Museum in Sarov. Теги:RUSSIACHINA
