Conducted by a US Navy/Northrop Grumman test team, the flight took off at 2:09 pm PST and lasted 29 minutes. This event marks a critical step in the program, moving the team forward to meet the demonstration objectives of a tailless fighter-sized unmanned aircraft to safely take off from and land on the deck of a US Navy aircraft carrier. A social media version of this release that includes photos, video clips, and additional quotes and background material, is available at www.irconnect.com "First flight represents the compilation of numerous tests to validate the airworthiness of the aircraft, and the robustness and reliability of the software that allows it to operate as an autonomous system and eventually have the ability to take-off and land aboard an aircraft carrier," said Capt. Jaime Engdahl, the Navy's UCAS-D program manager. Northrop Grumman is the Navy's UCAS-D prime contractor and leader of the UCAS-D industry team. "Designing a tailless, fighter-sized unmanned aircraft from a clean sheet is no small feat," said Janis Pamiljans, vice president and UCAS-D program manager for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace ... Courtesy: Naval Air Systems Command/NAVAIR, Northrop Grumman Corporation In August 2007, the US Navy selected Northrop Grumman as the prime contractor for the Unmanned Combat Air System Carrier Demonstration (UCAS-D) program. The program will demonstrate the first-ever carrier launches and recoveries, and autonomous aerial refueling by an autonomous, low-observable representative unmanned aircraft. The six-year $635.8 million contract calls for the development of two fighter-sized, long- range, high endurance aircraft designated the X-47B. Test activities are in progress that will lead to completion of the Navy's carrier launch and recovery objectives by 2013. Successful at-sea trials will set the stage for potential follow-on acquisition programs. Wes Bush, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Northrop Grumman Corporation, sits down with Darden's Dean Bob Bruner to discuss topis such as national security, innovation, government spending, purpose, Thomas Jefferson, aerospace, electronics, information systems, technology finance, general management, M&A and engineering. This "fireside chat" is part of Darden's Leadership Speaker Series. Mr. Bush didn't take very long to make his mark. On his very first day on the job, in 2010, Northrop Grumman's new chief executive announced that he was uprooting the company's headquarters from Los Angeles -- where it had been since its founding in 1939 -- and relocating it to the Washington, DC, area. The move, he said, "was made to bring the nation's second-largest defense contractor closer to its key customer: the US government." Analysts say that he is an observant businessman who is gunning to make Northrop the nation's leading defense contractor. Wes Bush assumed the role of chairman in July 2011. He was named chief executive officer and president in January 2010 and elected to the company's Board of Directors in 2009. He previously served as the president and chief operating officer of the company. Before that, he served as the corporate vice president and chief financial officer, and, earlier, as the president of the company's Space Technology sector. Recorded October 6, 2011.
