Making of The Mercator K55K German Knife - Solingen, Germany

Education

This was the first pocket knife I ever owned. They were brought back to the United States by GI's after WWII. They really caught on and by the late 1950s when Solingen had begun to rebuild they began to be imported in large numbers. I have found documents in the Solingen city archive with this knife design going back to the mid to late 1800s. But, I believe it may be older than that. The patent has been bought and sold over the years. It is now owned by Otter-Messer and can still be bought today. It is a simple, elegant design that has withstood the test of time.

General characteristics of K-329 Severodvinsk A ceremony of launching a new nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine Severodvinsk (855 Yasen class submarine/ Graney class) took place in the dockyard of the Sevmash defence plant on 15.06.2010. The new submarine is designed to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles (up to 3100 miles or 5000 km) with nuclear warheads, and effectively engage submarines, surface warships and land-based targets. The Severodvinsk's armament includes 24 cruise missiles, and is also equipped with eight torpedo launchers, as well as mines and anti-ship missiles such as SS-N-16 Stallion.

Robot-car technology by Google

Google has recently revealed in an announcement that it has been secretly testing cars that can drive on their own, with the help of artificial-intelligence software that can sense anything near the car and make decisions similar to what a human driver would make. Google has revealed it is testing robot cars that drive completely on their own, having already cruised almost a quarter of a million kilometres around California.

Su-35S

The first series-produced Su-35S Flanker-E multirole fighter took off from the Komsomolsk-on-Amur airfield on 3rd May. The aircraft spent one and a half hours in the air testing propulsion and control systems. Aircraft company Sukhoi have already pretested Su-35S. The multirole fighter will be transferred to the Russian Defence Ministry after completion of the tests. It's planned to transfer 48 fighter jet before 2015.

07.07.10 Solar Impulse HB-SIA 24-hour flight

The Swiss-built aircraft "Solar Impulse" (HB-SIA) is being tested to assess whether it can fly at night, using solar cells on its wings to generate enough power to stay in the air for 24 hours. The experimental aircraft is the weight of a family car but has a wingspan about equal to a large passenger jet such as an Airbus A 340-500. One of the team's ultimate principal aims is to prove that renewable energy can be used for safe, long-distance flights.
