Archaeologists discovered another Mayan calendar in Guatemala showing the Earth's time will continue beyond December. A writer for the Boston Globe explains how a Boston University student discovered the calendar by chance while the team was excavating Mayan ruins. "...BU undergraduate, Maxwell Chamberlain, spotted a faded painting on a patch of wall during his lunch break ... William Saturno, an assistant professor of archeology at BU who led the team, began an excavation, and discovered a magnificent, nearly life-sized portrait of a Maya king..." A 6 by 6 foot room houses the calendar with delicately painted hieroglyphs, numbers, and notations — never seen before. Here's a video from National Geographic: "Inside on the walls a well preserved mural and some mysterious astronomical and calendar symbols." Live Science says those calendar symbols are ... "...complex indeed, featuring stacked bars and dots representing fives and ones and recording lunar cycles in six-month chunks of time. ... The Maya recorded time in a series of cycles, ... called baktuns. ... In one column, the ancient scribe even worked out a cycle of time recording 17 baktuns." That 17 baktuns means time will extend 7000 years into the future — contradicting the previous Mayan calendar that resulted in end of the world rumors. The Daily ... Paleontologists have discovered a car-sized turtle in a Colombian coalmine that may have eaten alligators and ruled a large swath of land and fresh water. After the Great Extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, reptiles continued to thrive, with some of them, like the 40-foot Titanoboa, growing to enormous sizes and dominating the post-apocalyptic epoch. This titanic turtle, dubbed Carbonemys cofrinii, was a Titanoba contemporary, at the size of a Fiat with a skull as big as a football. And in an era where ancient crocs preyed on small turtles, this 6-foot shell-dweller flipped the predator and prey relationship. How did creatures like this get so big? Scientists think the lush, hot environment helped—as did a lack of predators. So, we've got the mutant turtles—now, we just need to figure out if they liked pizza and knew kung fu. Gabriel Torres and his uncle were driving home when they spotted a section of grassland burning. As they approached, they observed a small lifeless body of a strange being lying near some smouldering grass. Gabriel picked the creature up and upon arriving home had the presence of mind to preserve the body in a jar and take some pictures. After contacting the local authorities, a medical team took charge of the creature's body and transported it away for analysis. Could this be a dead Grey or is it an elaborate hoax? Time will tell. A team of archaeologists has made an incredible find at Pachacamac, near Lima, Peru. Excavating directly in front of the temple, the team found an enormous burial chamber completely intact and containing more than 80 individual remains as well as ceramic vessels, animal remains, copper and gold alloy artifacts, and masks. A dozen newborn babies and infants were found around the perimeter, and the team is investigating whether they had been sacrificed. Certain remains show the individuals suffered from serious illness, consistent with other skeletons found on the site, which researchers believe may have been a site where the sick sought a cure, a "Prehispanic Lourdes." The artifacts date the tomb to around 1000 AD, and miraculously survived pillaging during the colonial period. UNESCO is reviewing the larger Pachacamac site for World Heritage Status—not surprising, especially considering this latest find.
