This video shows the use of Native Instruments' MASSIVE synthesizer, which shifted the paradigm for software synthesis development in late 2006. MASSIVE's fat, analog sound is unique to the soft-synth world, offering a wide scope of sound design possibilities. But underneath all that, is an extremely simple-to-use, great sounding engine, that can provide some of the baddest bass tones you've ever heard. Check out the video, and the patches that are linked through the site below. http Notes on the patches: Wobble 1- This is a basic demonstration of the ideas seen in the video. One oscillator, one filter, one LFO. very basic. Wobble 2- This is the patch that was created in the video. You have a the dual-oscillator setup, using the same wavetable and settings, one is simply pitched an octave down. Try putting an LFO on the pitch of one of the oscillators, but only modulate the pitch by .10 or .15 of a half step. This will give a thicker and different feel to the sound. Wobble 3- This is an example that has been used in one of The Synthesist's tracks previously. Its an example of experimentation with the LFO, applied to the Ring Modulator in addition to the Filter's Frequency Cutoff. Try applying an LFO to the Phase knob in the Modulation Oscillator. The actress who played the tragic and pitiful role of the binge drinking woman in the video was played by Scottish actress Kirsty Shepheard. For most of the video she was not putting on an act as she was actually drunk. You can read her profile at the IMDB. The video closes with her passing out on a bench near her home and dreaming of rolling down an unending golden staircase. As the location didnt have the look required for the staircase sequence, it was decided to replace the original with a golden CG staircase. In post production (undertaken by a company known as MPC), the sequence was camera tracked, and once the director had approved the look, the 15 shots were rendered. The falling woman was then restored from the original footage into the CG environment. The opening shot was particularly challenging involving seamlessly joining 3 separate takes into one smooth 10-second shot. Her shadow and reflections were added throughout the sequence to further place her in the scene. Recently, NI updated MASSIVE to include some really important functionality, most notably the ability to both MIDI assign/learn and host automate MASSIVE's awesome LFO's/Modulators. Check out the video, your wobbles will be much easier to achieve, and you'll be able to get a lot more experimental with your modulations. Download presets and vj clips here: www.humanworkshop.com Since our fret_1 video seems to be doing quite well on YouTube as well as Vimeo, we decided to complete the cycle by unraveling a bit of the production magic in three in-depth fret tutorials. In this first tutorial, Durk shows how to create the heavy ripping bass-line modulations as the are applied in the second half of fret_1. Fret_1 might be a very abstract production all together, but still, the synthesis of both video and audio are kept very basic. This kind of makes it a showcase of what avarage production software has to offer, without getting lost in detail, both on an audio as on a visual level. In this tutorial, Durk unravels the Massvie patch responsible for the heavy ripping bass-line featured in the video (also downlodable in the link mentioned earlier). Eventhough the music in fret_1 is very sound-design like, the electronic instruments which are used are perfectly capable of being applied to productions in the range of drum and bass to dubstep and hip-, as well as glitch-hop. Stay tuned for two other fret_1 tutorials, one of which I going to be hosted by Equiloud, in which he explains how he did some of the animations featured in fret_1, and another by Leisure-B, in which he explains how to use battery and looped drum material in order to create fat but dynamic drums.
