Deutsche Bahn's planned stock market flotation due to take place in late October was postponed because of the global financial crisis, but it has not been scrapped. News of lucrative executive payouts linked to the flotation have attracted considerable criticism. At the moment, DB managers are traveling the world on the hunt for investors and new business ventures. Germany's rail company is aiming to expand internationally with the help of its subsidiary DB-International. It has a staff of 800 and is involved in big infrastructure projects: from the building of a rail line through Saudi Arabia to the training of high-speed-train drivers in Taiwan. Only Germany and France have drivers who are experienced enough to drive these trains. Now they're helping to train their Taiwanese counterparts. Siegfried Hofreiter owns 20.000 hectares of farmland making him Europe's biggest farmer. Most of that land is in eastern Germany and Lithuania. Hofreiter does 28 million euros of business every year and his company is listed on the stock exchange. He's seeking to diversify into producing biogas but agriculture is a risky business even at the best of times when the world's population is growing and when prosperity in developing countries is driving up demand for food. Airbus reckons that the number of cargo planes is set to soar. Both Airbus and Boeing have full order books and can't keep up with demand. 'Elbe Flugzeugwerke' in Dresden converts passenger planes into cargo planes. It was founded in 1955 under the communist regime in East Germany and now belongs to EADS, which also owns Airbus.
