January 8, 1987 86-87 Blazers was an incredible offensive team. Led by Kiki Vandeweghe and Clyde Drexler, a total of seven players averaged in double figures in scoring that year. (This is probably an NBA record shared with the Showtime Lakers and maybe some other teams. But since I didn't have a chance to look it up I can't say I'm 100% sure). Considering the Bulls roster that year it was almost a necessity for Jordan to have a high scoring game in order for Chicago to have a chance. Playing partly on small forward, Jordan started the game with ultra-high intensity. With jumpers and drives he first got Drexler into foul trouble, then Jerome Kersey. Finished with 53 points on 20-34 (59%) shooting. Also assisted big baskets at the end and came up with a clean block to seal the game in the crunch even though a bogus foul was called. 53 was his regular season-career high at that time. There was a small problem in the original broadcast and that is at the beginning of the second half, the announcers faced a technical problem and it was fixed halfway through the 4th quarter. So, in that period there's no commentary but everything is pretty obvious, so it shouldn't be a major problem I think. Enjoy. Post game notes & quotes: =========================== CHICAGO - How long can the Air Jordan fly-and-drive show continue to run? Michael Jordan stepped "forward" last night to show what a bargain he really is, scoring a regular season career-high 53 points in the Bulls' 121-117 ... MJ's 1st 50+pt game is this Legendary Game. It's still the playoff record and is ranked 3rd in the book "Michael Jordan's Top 50 Games". NBA Sophomore MJ was just 23 years old but he would show the world in just his 6th playoff game that there would never be another player like him again. This Celtics team was considered perhaps the greatest team ever. Having won 67 games, 40-1 at home, 31 straight at home and on a 14 win streak, MJ single-handedly almost dismantled them. After scoring 49 points in Game 1 (which I also have up on youtube), McHale said, "That will never happen again." The Celtics went back and brainstormed to stop MJ and came back to hold MJ to 63. At times, putting 4-5 bodies on Jordan, Jordan was well, still Jordan. MJ missed 64 games in the regular season with a broken foot and returned just 6 weeks earlier but in this game, the legend of Michael Jordan was born. Scoring on vicious attacks, athletic jumpers from everywhere and finesse and power moves all at once, MJ displayed an intensity to win and take the entire Boston Team all by himself. It was chilling to watch. Scaring the guts out of the Champion Celtics in their unbeatable home court, MJ played a game that still stands as the greatest post-season record of all-time with 63 points. The only quote you need to remember is Bird saying, "That was God disguised as Michael Jordan. He's the most awesome player I've ever seen...he was getting his points in the flow of the game...scary." Celtics coach KC ... 4-20-1986 - Eastern Conf. Round 1 Game 2 - After playing only 18 regular season games in the 1985 - 1986 season because of a foot injury, Michael Jordan shows just how well he recovered by torching the Celtics for 63 pts in a double OT loss. This number (63) set the record for most individual points scored in a playoff game that still stands today. What's amazing about this feat is that Jordan scored 63 against what is thought by many to be one of the greatest teams to be ever assembled. After the game Larry Bird quoted "I didn't think anyone was capable of doing what Michael has done to us." "He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today. I think it's just God disguised as Michael Jordan."
