The new Defence Secretary, Philip Hammond, has begun his first working week in charge of the Ministry of Defence. He took over the job after the resignation of Dr Liam Fox on Friday evening. The keel laying ceremony has taken place for HMS Anson, the Royal Navy's latest Astute-class nuclear submarine. It took place at BAe system's plant in Barrow-in-Furness and was attended by members of the submarine service and those who will build her. There will be seven Astute submarines in total, and the government is insisting on massive savings on the remainder of the programme.
